Hinglish, in beta
Hinglish voice typing on Mac.
Speak Hindi and English in the same sentence. Lipik types it in Roman letters, in any app on your Mac. Hinglish support is in beta.
Free and open source. Hinglish mode needs macOS 26 or later.
What it does
A lot of us don't talk in one language at a time. A message to a friend or a teammate often mixes both. Most dictation tools expect one language, so the Hindi words come out wrong, or the tool tries to turn them into English words.
With Hinglish mode, you hold fn and talk the way you normally do. Lipik types the whole sentence in Roman letters, the way people write Hinglish in chats. It works in any app where you can type: a chat app, your email, a document or a code editor.
- You say
- "Hi, aaj ka din kaisa raha?"
- Lipik types
- Hi, aaj ka din kaisa raha?
How it works
Lipik's own speech model is built for English. For Hinglish, Lipik also uses Apple's dictation, which runs on your Mac in macOS 26 and later. With the English (India) language, Apple's dictation writes Hindi words in Roman letters.
When you speak, both run at the same time on your Mac. If what you said reads as English, Lipik keeps its own text, so English dictation is as fast as before. If it hears Hindi words, it uses Apple's text instead.
Words you add to your Dictionary, such as names, are passed to Apple's dictation too, so they are more likely to come out right.
How to turn it on
Hinglish mode is on by default on macOS 26 and later. To check it, or to turn it back on:
- Open Lipik's Settings and go to Dictation.
- Under Speech to text, set Speech engine to Auto (Hinglish mode).
- Check that Apple dictation language is English (India). If Lipik says Apple's speech files aren't on this Mac yet, click Download. This needs the internet once.
- Keep an English-only speech model, such as the default Parakeet model. With a model for many languages, Lipik uses that model on its own.
What beta means
Hinglish mode works, but it makes more mistakes than English dictation. A few limits for now:
- It needs macOS 26 or later. On older versions, Lipik uses its English model only.
- Meeting notes use Lipik's own model, so Hinglish mode doesn't apply to them yet.
- It writes Roman letters only.
If something comes out wrong, you can report it on GitHub.
Questions
Is Hinglish voice typing free?
Yes. Lipik is free and open source under the MIT licence, with no account and no word limit. Hinglish mode is included.
Which macOS version do I need?
macOS 26 or later, on a Mac with Apple silicon (M1 or later). On older versions of macOS, Lipik still works for English.
Does it work offline?
Yes, once the speech files are on your Mac. Lipik's own speech model is a one-time 731 MB download from Hugging Face. Apple's English (India) speech files are a one-time download through macOS, if your Mac doesn't have them yet. After that, Hinglish mode works with Wi-Fi off.
Does it write Hindi in Devanagari?
No. Hinglish mode writes everything in Roman letters, the way most people type Hinglish in chats.
Why is it called beta?
It works, but it makes more mistakes than English dictation. Hindi words can come out with a different spelling, or a word can be missed. We are still improving it.
